Sleep Insights (Part 4) : How To Know If You Have Sleep Apnea

Updated: Sep 29

One simple indicator for me was not being able to read a story to my child while lying down on my back. It felt like the words got stuck in my throat and it was difficult to push the air out of my lungs. Here are some other indicators that I experienced:

  • Waking up in a sweat

  • Waking up with a fast heartbeat

  • Waking up with a headache

  • High-blood pressure

This doesn't necessarily mean that you have sleep apnea if you experienced those same things but at the very least, I suggest that you verify if that is a problem for you or not. I think the best way to know if you have sleep apnea is to record and analyze your sleep. I use a smartphone app called "SnoreLab" (NOTE: I am not affiliated with "SnoreLab") and it has been invaluable in helping me solve my severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) without using a medical device. Now, I get near-perfect sleep.

One note about high blood pressure, it wasn't due to my salty diet. I have never stopped or curbed eating savory foods because I just love them too much, do you know what I mean. When I started to solve my sleep apnea, my blood pressure went down. I believe that my blood pressure is mainly caused by stress (related to sleep apnea) and a lack of exercise. I will write a post about that in the future.
